People

The founding members of Oregon Physics have more than 100 years of combined experience designing and building scientific instruments based on charged particle optics. We have designed many of the leading ion beam and electron beam instruments used in research and industrial applications.

Noel Smith

Noel has 20 years experience developing commercial ion and electron beam instrumentation at leading instrument vendors including Cambridge Mass Spectrometry, Physical Electronics, and FEI Company. He carried out his PhD studies in the Advanced SIMS group at the University of Warwick under Prof. Mark Dowsett. His work at Warwick involved the development of a Floating Low Energy Ion Gun (FLIG) and associated instrumentation for the acquisition of ultralow energy SIMS depth profiles. Noel has also developed Duoplasmatron, electron impact, Penning, RF, liquid metal and surface ionization ion sources, Time-of-Flight and Quadrupole mass spectrometers, as well as ion and electron optics for commercial and research based applications in the surface science community.

Paul Tesch

Paul has 18 years experience developing ion beam and electron beam instrumentation for a variety of applications. He worked in several roles at FEI Company including Optical Scientist and Staff Scientist and was responsible for the design and development of FEI's focused ion beam columns. Paul has worked on a wide range of ion and electron beam instrumentation including converting a tandem electrostatic ion accelerator into a high power, low emittance recirculating electron source, developing an unique 8mm period hybrid undulator for a continuous wave free electron laser, and numerous high resolution focused ion beam systems. Paul holds four patents for electron and ion beam technology and has several patents pending.

Noel Martin

Noel has over 28 years experience developing electron and ion sources and focusing columns. He worked at FEI Company in several roles including Production Manager, Engineering Manager, and Senior Development Engineer. He has developed a large number of commercial ion and electron columns.

Rod Boswell

Rod has over 40 years experience researching plasma and ion beam systems. Rod Boswell is a Professor at the Australian National University and head of the Space Plasma, Power and Propulsion group of the Plasma Research Laboratory. He is active in the fields of plasma processing of surfaces for microelectronics and optoelectronics, plasma thrusters, fuel cells as well as basic linear and non-linear processes in plasmas. Over the past 15 years he has published over 100 papers in major international journals, been granted seven patents, given about 50 invited lectures in international conferences and presented his group's work to industrialists in many countries.
